Frequently Asked Questions
How does this work? Is it a subscription service? Is it reusable?
Aboki Box Schools is not a subscription service. Kits are purchased individually or as a set. And yes, it is reusable. While we make every effort to find items that are durable, we do recommend replacing the hands-on, tactile portion of the kit every 3-5 years.
Is Aboki Box Schools content geared toward specific grade levels?
We are currently aligned with the GA 6th and 7th grade standards with plans to expand to high school world history as well as elementary 4th and 5th grade. We can customize for other state curriculums.
Is Aboki Box Schools aligned with GA Standards of Excellence?
Most of the Aboki Box Schools’ cultural learning kits are aligned with GA Standards and focus on the countries and regions that students learn about in social studies. Currently, these include Africa, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latin America, Mexico, South Korea, Southwest Asia, and Southern and Eastern Asia.
What hands-on, physical items are included in Aboki Box Schools?
Items vary per kit, depending on the specific culture, country, and region. Generally speaking, content is curated to introduce students to the culture of the country or region they are learning about in social studies. Examples of these culturally relevant items might include games, small instruments, daily use items, country flags, currency, religious symbols, textiles/mosaics, objects related to significant holidays/celebrations, art-related projects, masks, books, items related to folklore and storytelling, items related to ancient civilizations and indigenous people, and more.
Also, included is a beautiful Culture Connector magazine for deeper learning and a large (36 x 60) colorful world map with clear longitude and latitude overlay for student map skills activity designed to help students grasp the concept of using maps and the invisible grid.
What items are included online/digitally?
Online teachers and students will each find a resource portal designed for them. The teacher portal includes instructions on how to use the kit, lesson plans developed by fellow educators, a standards-at-a-glance directory explaining to which GA standards each lesson plan aligns, a digital (and printable) student workbook developed in Google Classroom, answer keys, and post-assessments.
The student portal features several videos including an overview of the region or country, a greeting video, language videos, and activities videos from a youth ambassador from the specific country or region, music, “tour-guide” videos so students can get a glimpse of that part of the world, cooking videos and a digital copy of the Culture Connector Magazine.
How many kits do you recommend per teacher/classroom?
Depending on how the teacher plans to use it, our recommendation is one kit per 5-8 students or at least 2-3 kits per teacher/classroom.
For example, if your school has four social studies teachers, our recommendation would be to provide them each with two or three of each country/region box they are interested in (i.e., you would order 8-12 boxes of just Mexico or just Southwest Asia so each teacher would have two or three in the classroom).
Why is there a difference in price?
The price varies depending on whether the kits are regional (including content for multiple countries in a region) or country-specific. Also, the price indicates if the kit includes standards-aligned lesson plans and a Google Classroom digital student workbook.
